First official concert by the philharmonie zuidnederland since the corona lockdown.
The 15th edition of the Liberation concert takes place on Sunday September 20.
This unique concert by the philharmonie zuidnederland at the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten is a musical tribute and a lasting memory to the American soldiers who gave their lives during the liberation of Europe during World War II.
Theme
The theme of the 15th Liberation Concert is ‘Struggle’. With profound, heroic, still and stirring music, the 15th Liberation Concert highlights all aspects of the struggle for life and death. The South Netherlands Philharmonic will perform this year’s Liberation concert, conducted by Arjan Tien and with soloist Lei Wang. The following pieces will be performed:
Adagio ma non Troppo from String quartet nr 14 by Ludwig van Beethoven, The Unanswered Question by Ives, The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams en Symfonie nr 44 ‘Trauer’ by Joseph Haydn.
Cemetery closed for non-concert visitors
The Covid19 crisis left the organisation in uncertainty for a long time whether the concert could take place. The last couple of months the board of the Liberation Concert worked hard to set up a workable corona protocol. As such, the organisation gave long consideration about the protocol. Together with project leader Ton Derks and superintendent David Americo (American Battle Monuments Commission) nothing was left to chance.
“We follow the guidelines of the Dutch health organisation (RIVM) which have been further translated into practical rules by the National Health and Safety Board. In this, filling in the checklist and collecting contact details of all visitors, keeping the 1,5meter distance and crowd management are crucial. In consultation with the ABMC we have decided to close the cemetery for non-concert visitors on Sunday September 20. Herewith we create the space to meet all conditions for a safe course of the event. Besides this, the concert is being held in the open air. This package of measures and circumstances enable in a responsible manner, the organisation of two separate concerts for 700 guests each. Of course, we are aware that the health situation is still very fragile and therefore measures can be changed or revoked which may have implications for the concert. We have to cope with this situation as we move forward with the concert. Together with all our partners, we hope to enjoy the sounds of the philharmonie zuidnederland in this iconic setting on September 20”, according to spokesman George Deswijzen.
