THE CEMETERY

Exactly 8,301 American soldiers are buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial in Margraten. Unknown heroes who, during World War II, gave their lives for our freedom; the freedom of Europe. In 1945, the Dutch government gave the ground on which the cemetery was built in perpetual loan to the United States, out of respect and gratitude. The cemetery is managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The Margraten Memorial Center Foundation focuses on the realization of an educational museum concept.

The Foundation for Adopting Graves American Cemetery Margraten offers interested parties the opportunity to adopt the grave of a fallen liberator. A unique phenomenon worldwide. Meanwhile, all 8301 graves have been adopted.

The Foundation United Adopters American War Graves works to keep the memory of the American soldiers who are buried or remembered at various American cemeteries in Europe alive, by means of various projects. With the project The Faces of Margraten, the foundation aims to give a face to as many soldiers as possible.
